117th MAY DAY MARCH SUNDAY MAY 1ST 2011
The 117th annual May Day march will take place through the streets of Melbourne on Sunday May 1st beginning at the Trades Hall Council, Lygon St, Carlton at 1.30pm.
This year the main theme of the march is the need to mobilise to win the right to strike and other basic workers’ rights in Australia.
We are also continuing to demand a Victorian public holiday for May Day, May 1st, each year.
Ten Thousand workers are expected to march through the city and then back to the Trades Hall to the May Day speakers’ platform where speakers will address the crowd on the topics of workers’ rights, the nuclear disaster in Japan, the Northern Territory Intervention, workers’ struggles in Colombia and the economic, social and environmental crises across the globe.
“this is May 1st international workers’ day, the only day in the annual calendar where workers highlight their struggles, achievements and victories, and resolve to redouble their efforts to achieve a better deal and social change ,” says Len Cooper, Secretary of the Melbourne May Day Committee.
